Subcommittees
The Subcommittee on Older Women (SCOW)
Co-chairs: Judy Lear, Patty Day
The Subcommittee on Older Women is a subcommittee of the NGO Committee on the Status of Women, which strives to improve the quality and status of life of midlife and older women by promoting increased attention to the situation of older women globally. Older women have their own needs and issues, which are often forgotten about or they are discriminated against in a global context.

The Subcommittee on the Priority Theme (SCOPT)
Co-chairs: Catherine Ferguson and Jackie Shapiro
SCOPT will provide education on the priority theme of 2009 CSW 53: “The equal sharing of responsibilities between women and men, including caregiving in the context of HIV/AIDS”.
SCOPT will seek to promote dialogue with member states in partnership with DAW and the Bureau, and promote inclusive participation of NGOs throughout the world in the preparation for CSW 53.
In looking through the Beijing Platform for Action, it was noted that the theme of sharing of responsibilities of women and men was discussed under the following points:
- Women and poverty
- Education and Training
- Women and Health
- Women and the Economy
- Women in Power and Decision-Making.
These themes connect with the substance of many of the CONGO committees — for example:
- Women and poverty
(NGO Committees and working groups — Social Development, Poverty Eradication) - Education and training
(NGO Committees and working groups — WG on Education in UNICEF, UNICEF, Human Rights, Family, WG on Girls) - Women and health
(NGO Committees and working groups — Mental Health, HIV/AIDS) - Women and the economy
(NGO Committees and working groups — ILO, CSW Geneva, Financing for Development) - Women in power and decision-making
( NGO Committees and working groups, Committee on UNIFEM)
Because of this the sub-committee co-chairs would like to invite interested substantive committees or members of these committees to work with us in the preparation for the 2009 CSW. One way this might occur is to have members from your committee participate in the part of our subcommittee which is looking at the issue area above. However, this is only one possibility and we are open to others.
Responses to this invitation can be made to Catherine Ferguson. Please respond by 1 June 2008 if possible.
